Itinerary

Swakopmund, Namibia

Set along Namibia's spectacularly scenic coast, the seaside town of Swakopmund is known for its wide-open avenues, colonial architecture, and its surrounding otherworldly desert terrain. Founded in 1892 as the main harbour for German South-West Africa, Swakopmund is often described as being more German than Germany. Now a seaside resort town, Swakopmund is the capital of the Skeleton Coast tourism area and has plenty to keep visitors happy. The quirky mix of German and Namibian influences, adventure options, laid-back atmosphere and cool sea breeze make it a very popular Namibian destination. Visitors can look forward to a number of exciting activities including: quad biking, horse riding, paragliding, fishing, sightseeing and fascinating desert tours.

Day 1

Day Notes:

You will be collected from your accommodation within the Windhoek city limits or the airport by 07.15 and transferred to for a short pre-departure meeting. We are heading west, to the port town of Walvis Bay. Walvis Bay lagoon is renowned for its birdlife, in particular we are here to see the flamingos. We complete the final leg of our journey into Swakopmund and we check into our accommodation at the centrally located Hotel A La Mer.
Swakopmund offers many opportunities to keep us busy. The town centre is small and easily explored on foot, you can do scenic flights over the desert, or, for the more adventurous, perhaps try sky diving or quad biking over and in the Namib dunes. Our guide will discuss all the options with you.
Dinner tonight is for your own account, Swakopmund boasts some truly excellent restaurants.

Driving time: ~4 hours

  • Transfer from Chameleon Backpackers Guesthouse to Hotel Pension à la Mer

  • Walvis Bay Lagoon

  • Check-in to Hotel Pension à la Mer

Sesriem, Namibia

As there is no accommodation at Sossusvlei, visitors to this desert wilderness are likely to end up staying at Sesriem, 65 kilometres away, where camps and lodges serve as a base from which to explore the dunes. Sesriem Canyon, a deep chasm carved through the rocks by water, is a striking natural feature of the area that is best explored on foot. Stony walls rise up sharply on both sides of the canyon, while birds roost in its crags and lizards dart along the ledges. The canyon’s name was coined when early settlers used it as a water source, using six lengths of leather (‘ses riem – six thongs) tied together to lower buckets into the water at the base of canyon.)

Facilities include private bathrooms, kitchenettes, barbecue sites, a bar, a restaurant, and a swimming pool.

Day 2

Day Notes:

Today you'll leave Swakopmund at 11:30 am so we can enjoy an optional activity. For the adrenaline junkies, this could be flying down a sand dune head first at 60km/h on a sandboard, exploring the dune field on a quad biking tour, or discovering the “old city” of Swakopmund on a fat bike (e-bike option available).

Whatever you choose, you'll depart Swakopmund no later than 11:30 am and drive through the Namib Desert via the Kuiseb Pass, crossing the Tropic of Capricorn, stopping briefly in Solitaire, and arriving at your camp late afternoon. You'll set up your tents and enjoy the sunset over the Namib Desert while listening to the barking geckos. There is a pool and bar available, and our guide prepares dinner. An early night is recommended.

Sunrise in the Dunes is the game's name this morning, which means a pre-dawn start. Your first stop will be at Dune 45. The best time to photograph the dunes is at sunrise and sunset. After a quick breakfast, you'll carry on for the last few kilometers before entering the ancient Tsauchab Riverbed.

You will visit Dead Vlei, an ancient pan surrounded by sand, strikingly populated with dead, skeletal camelthorn trees. You will have time to explore the area on foot and to climb one of the highest dunes in the world, some towering 300 m above us, the views are breathtaking.

You will drive back to Sesriem for lunch and perhaps a dip in the swimming pool. In the afternoon, you'll take a short excursion to see the Sesriem Canyon.

  • Sossusvlei excursion.

Aus, Namibia

Perched above the plains of the Namib Desert in the rocky Aus Mountains, the small village of Aus lies at the heart of phenomenal botanic diversity. Aus serves as an excellent base from which to see the area’s major attraction: the feral horses of the Namib Desert, which run wild and free in the sparsely vegetated plains. The best place for viewings is at the water trough at Garub, which lies just twenty kilometres away from Aus. Visitors can gain insight into the Succulent Karoo by visiting beautiful Gondwana Sperrgebiet Rand Park, home to the most biodiverse desert in the world. Don't miss the opportunity to camp under the famously clear Namibian night sky and experience the desert landscape on horseback.

We aim to arrive in the early afternoon and set up camp, giving us time to stretch our legs on the unguided hiking trails on the property. The landscape is wide open vistas and we are hoping for a spectacular sunset.

Quiver Tree Forest, Namibia

Set amidst the arid terrain near Keetmanshoop are the ancient quiver trees, a striking Southern African phenomenon with twisted branches reaching towards the sky. These tall and photo-friendly trees, reaching up to eight metres, exhibit a unique dichotomous branching pattern, creating a distinctive candelabra-like silhouette. Slow-growing, some specimens in the forest are estimated to be 200-300 years old, thriving in the harsh climate by storing water in their thick trunks and fleshy leaves. Protected as a national monument in Namibia, the Quiver Tree Forest holds both ecological and cultural significance, with its smooth grey bark and fibrous wood once used by the San people for quivers. Nearby, the Giant's Playground, a geological wonder of large dolerite boulders, boasts a unique feature of appearing haphazardly stacked, as if by a giant child. A nearby rest camp provides a comfortable base for travellers keen to experience Namibia's surreal natural landscapes firsthand.

Here we have the opportunity to overlook the second largest canyon in the world. After lunch we continue our adventure heading to our last destination; The Quiver Tree Forest. It is located just north-east of Keetmanshoop and here approximately 250 quiver trees can be found.
